This image is one of a small group of paintings by artist Colin Burns depicting London parks at dusk.
For this painting, Burns was particularly interested in the peaceful aspect of Victoria Tower Gardens in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the busy roads to the left.
Central to his composition is the Buxton Memorial, a gothic style fountain commemorating the work of Thomas Fowell Buxton MP (1786-1845), who led the parliamentary campaign for the abolition of slavery between 1818 and 1837.
The memorial was originally placed in Parliament Square in 1865 but was removed after the Second World War and re-erected in the gardens in 1957, where it joined a statue of Emmeline Pankhurst, a Suffragette, and The Burghers of Calais, a large sculpture by the eminent French artist, Auguste Rodin.
Together, these monuments evoke the path of freedom from oppression.
Colin Burns is a self-taught artist from Norfolk whose work covers a wide spectrum and that includes landscape and natural history subjects. His work resides in many important collections across Europe and America.
