This snowy scene shows the River Front façade of the House of Lords end of the Palace of Westminster, with the Victoria Tower rising in the background. The projecting pavilion
on the left was designed by Charles Barry as the residence of the Lord Chancellor, who until 2006 was the presiding officer of the House of Lords. Since then the Lord Speaker has presided in the Lords and the Lord Chancellor's Residence has served as Peers' offices.
The photograph illustrates the different architectural details that make up the building of Parliament as a whole; a vertical arrangement of towers and pinnacles complimented by the horizontal line of windows which indicate the libraries and committee rooms along the river frontage. The roof is made up of galvanised cast iron roof tiles, a major 19th century engineering feat as it was the first of its kind in the UK. The forefront depicts a copy of a George Vulliamy's (1817-1886) 'Dolphin Lamp', designed as the first row of electric lighting in London for the Northern Embankment in the 1860s.
